Classic Spaghetti Bolognese: A Family Favourite

A rich, flavour-packed Bolognese made with premium beef mince, simmered to perfection with tomatoes and herbs. This classic dish is perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner!

 

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes

 

Ingredients:

  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 400g spaghetti
  • Grated parmesan cheese, to serve

 

Optional Additions:

  • A splash of red wine (adds richness to the sauce)
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
  • A pinch of chilli flakes, for a bit of heat

 

Method:

  1. Prepare the Sauce Base:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
    • Add the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Brown the Beef:

    • Add the beef mince to the pan, breaking it up with a spoon.
    • Cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
  3. Simmer the Sauce:

    • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beef stock, oregano, and basil.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
    • Cover and let it simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Cook the Spaghetti:

    • While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to the boil.
    • Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions until al dente.
    • Drain and set aside.
  5. Combine and Serve:

    • Toss the cooked spaghetti with the Bolognese sauce until evenly coated.
    • Serve in bowls, topped with grated parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.

 

Tips:

  • For extra flavour, let the sauce simmer longer—up to an hour if you have the time.
  • Use high-quality beef mince for the best results.
  • Serve with a side of garlic bread or a fresh green salad to complete the meal.
